Jessica Slaughter joined chambers after establishing her career as a mixed common law barrister on the South Eastern Circuit. Jessica undertakes work in all areas of chambers’ practice across the region.

Prior to starting pupillage Jessica worked for a domestic violence charity and regularly appeared in criminal and family courts supporting victims. She was also a general advisor at the Citizens Advice Bureau and provided assistance to clients with a range of legal problems.

Jessica’s likeable and friendly approach is commended by clients, who are pleased to see that she can then swiftly change into a robust courtroom advocate who can fight their corner.

Jessica is happy to be approached by the Bar Pro Bono Unit and has provided assistance in family and civil cases.

Jessica is able to receive instructions directly from the public in certain cases.


Jessica has a busy criminal practice and is regularly instructed by both prosecution and defence. She represents privately and publicly funded defendants as well as prosecuting for the Probation Service, local authorities and the Crown Prosecution Service as a Level 3 panel advocate.

Jessica also has experience representing clients at Parole Board hearings including ‘lifer’ and complex recall cases.

At a successful sentencing hearing at the Court of Appeal, Jessica was praised by the Court for her “concise and persuasive oral submissions” and able representation of her client – Regina v Kass Khan Elgie [2015] EWCA Crim 676.

Jessica is an Associate Lecturer at Northumbria University, Newcastle, and teaches the Criminal Practice module on the Bar Professional Training Course.


Jessica has a range of experience from small claims to multi-track cases. Her civil practice covers a variety of areas including road traffic accidents, slip trip claims and contractual disputes. She is frequently instructed in personal injury claims, often providing written advices on quantum to assist during settlement of a claim. Her civil paperwork also involves drafting advices and pleadings in a wide range of matters including housing cases, consumer credit agreements and wrongful interference with goods claims. Jessica is well liked by her clients for her attention to detail, in particular when faced with a procedural issue.


Jessica also has a busy family practice dealing with both children and money cases. She has experience acting for the Local Authority, children and parents during public law proceedings. Given her background in supporting domestic violence victims, Jessica is well placed to advise and represent clients in cases involving non-molestation and occupation orders. In private law proceedings, she has represented clients at final hearing stage in cases involving internal relocation, special guardianship orders and transfer of residence. Jessica is anxious to ensure that representation will still be provided for those who need it given the changes to the family legal aid system and she is able to offer competitive rates.

Jessica represents clients in relation to applications for financial remedies including settlement and final hearings. Her varied cases have provided exposure to a number of issues, including pension disparity, inheritance disagreements and cohabitation disputes. Having previously received instructions from the Child Support Agency in cases against non-resident parents for non-payment of maintenance arrears, she has vital experience in relation to child maintenance cases.
